Gen X Blog – Welcome

A Journey Through Life as a Gen X Male in Modern Society

Hello, and welcome to That GenX Blog, a space where we dive deep into what it means to be a Gen X man navigating modern life. So what is Gen X? Well, its people born between 1965 and 1980, some other definitions are the latchkey generation ( given as most of us came home from school to an empty house as both parents were working later than school hours) and also we get labeled as the silent generation because we tend not to be easily offended, keep a lot of our opinions and feeling to ourself and generally feel that if it really doesn’t need saying then we won’t say it, whatever it may be.

My name is Kenny, and I was born in the mid-1960s, growing up in central Scotland during a time of incredible cultural change. I’ve seen the world evolve from the gritty streets of the ‘70s and ‘80s to the fast-paced, tech-driven landscape we live in today. This blog is my way of reflecting on those formative years while addressing the unique challenges and opportunities we face as Gen X people in the 21st century.

That Gen X Blog is more than just a nostalgic look at the past; it’s a place to explore what it means to age gracefully, stay relevant, and live a fulfilling life as we enter our 50s and beyond. Whether you’re looking for a trip down memory lane or practical advice on living your best life as a man over 50, you’ve come to the right place.

Now in true Gen X style, I’m a man, born of a generation that shoots from the hip, doesn’t get easily offended and stays in their lane so on that front I will be writting this blog from the viewpoint of a man in his late 50’s that was born in the 60’s, grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and adapted as little as possible beyond the age of 40. If you are a Gen X woman then I know you wont feel any offence that this will at times be taylored towards men but I also hope you read along anyway and enjoy the memories, opinions and observations from a GenXer.

To anyone from later generations who are easily offended or feel that this blog is not “all inclusive and diverse and respectful towards everything and everyone” then I suggest you just move along. This blog is not for you unless you actually want to learn a thing or two about independence, skepticism, adaptability and pragmatism.

What You Can Expect from That GenX Blog

As we continue to evolve, both personally and collectively, it’s essential to reflect on where we came from and where we’re headed. This blog will cover a range of topics that matter to us—those of us who grew up in the analog world but have embraced the digital age. Here’s a bit of what you can expect:

1. Reminiscent Posts: A Look Back at Growing Up in the 70’s and 80,s

I’ll be sharing personal stories and reflections about what it was like to come of age in the UK in the ‘70s and ‘80s. From the music we blasted on our Walkmans to the fashion we thought was cool (at the time!), to the way our social lives revolved around local pubs, nightclubs and football matches, this will be a place to reminisce about the good old days. But more than just nostalgia, these posts will explore how those formative experiences shaped the people we are today.

2. Gen X Health and Fitness

As men over 50, our bodies have changed, and so have our priorities. In this section, I’ll explore ways to maintain strength, vitality, and well-being as we age. From workout routines that suit the needs of older men to advice on nutrition and supplements, my goal is to help you stay fit and healthy as you navigate this new phase of life. Now I’m no expert on this even though I’ve worked in mental health for nearly 40 years however I will be researching wht I don’t know and hopefull in the future I will have guest writers on different subjects to write about things like health and wellbeing so stick around if this peaks your interest.

3. Fashion and Style for the Modern Gen X

I won’t even pretend to know anything about fashion but I will however do my best to link and research this. We can all look like a stylish Gen X man in todays modern world without looking like you have raided your sons wordrobe! We’ve all heard the phrase “age gracefully,” but that doesn’t mean giving up on style. That Gen X Blog will explore how to stay fashionable without looking like you’re trying too hard. From timeless wardrobe staples to tips on dressing for your body type as you age, I’ll be sharing advice on how to look sharp, confident, and age-appropriate.

4. Gen X – Family Life and Relationships

At this stage of life, many of us are juggling careers, family responsibilities, and even grandparenthood. I’ll be discussing the complexities of family life as a mature man, from maintaining a strong relationship with your partner to navigating the joys and challenges of fatherhood and grandparenting. It’s about understanding how to remain present and engaged while embracing the wisdom that comes with age.

5. Gen X – Mental Health and Well-Being

Now this is something I do know a bit about. I started working in mental health way back in 1886. I was 19 years old and have remained working in mental health, nearly 40 years experience. I have also suffered from mental health issues, especially later in life. Depression and anxiety are very common and very under diagnosed among the Gen X population. Probably stems from our childhood with parents who just let us get on with things and told us to brush it off and get on with it. Now, althouth this instilled great resilliance we also have this habit of brushing both physical and mental health issues under the carpet. One of the most critical issues men face today is mental health, and yet it’s often the least talked about. In this section, I’ll cover the importance of maintaining mental clarity, reducing stress, and boosting your overall emotional well-being. Whether it’s dealing with the pressures of aging, career changes, or life transitions, mental health is something we can’t ignore, and I’ll be offering advice, support, and real-life stories to help us all stay grounded.
